お気に入りの場所：My favorite place

私のお気に入りの場所は祖父母の家です。

My favorite place is my grandparents’  house.

下町の、30坪の土地に建つ小さな家です。

It's a small house built on a 100 square-meter lot in a traditional downtown area.

それは小さくて古いけれど、いつも綺麗に掃除されていました。

The house was small and old, but it was always kept clean.

彼らの家には縁側、土間、かまど、掘りごたつ、屋根裏部屋がありました。

It had a veranda, a dirt-floored area, a traditional stove called kamado, a sunkenkotatsu, and an attic.

お風呂はなかったので、近所の銭湯へ行きました。

Since there was no bathtub, we would go to a hot spring near my grandparents' house.

私は祖母と一緒にお風呂に入ることが大好きでした。

I loved  taking a bath with my grandmother.

また、夏には蚊帳を吊り、冬は練炭のアンカを布団に入れました。

Also, in the Summer we'd set up the mosquite nets, and in the winter we'd put the foot warmers fueled by briquettes inside the futon.

布団は勿論かいまき。

The futoni, of course, was the "Kaimaki".

かい巻きの中は練炭の香がして温かく、気持ちよかったな。

Inside the kaimaki, it smelled of briquettes and was warm—it felt so good.

また、大晦日が近づくと庭にうすときねを準備して、かまどで炊いた餅米でお餅をつきました。

And as the end of the yaear approached, we'd set up an Usu and a Kine in the garden and then pound mochi rice cooked in the kamado into mochi.

まっしろなお餅ができあがると、それらを縁側に並べて皆で切り餅や飾り餅を作りました。Once the pure white mochi was ready, we'd line it up on the veranda and shape it into slices and decorative pieces.

まるで明治時代のようで、私はそこに行くととても安らぎました。

It felt just like the Meiji era, and whenever I went there, my heart felt truly at peace.

今でもかまどの煙や掘り炬燵の匂い、仏壇の線香の香りや祖母の着物の樟脳のにおいが思い出されます。

I still remenber the smell of kamado's smork, the scent of the sunken kotatsu, the fragrance of incense from Buddhist alter, and the smell of camphor from my grandmather's kimono.
